Two heads are better than one. They can also be quicker than four. For Paul Infanti - the man with the Hoover - and Phil Jones, economies of personnel meant expedience. And more than a little spontaneity in the forging of Grade 'A' Joinery, their first long-player for local label Liquid Records.

"We knew we would have to work fast so we did each track in one day, recording mixing in the middle of last year and then more recently," said Paul singer/songwriter.

"And that comes across quite well in that it has energy - spending too much time can kill that energy."

Which is fair play. From the Stone Roses-ish opener If You Want My Love through to I Am Not A Singer the album has stamina as well as enough adventure to make you sit up and stick with it.

"We picked the odd weekend here and there and we used a 16-track studio. There were limitations in that we had to make decisions - we actually became more creative with the limitations. "Some of the tracks were recorded quite some time ago, we used the old and the new so we've got that kind of a band which has a progressed feel."

And Woodwork itself is a logical progression. Paul was previously in The Sideways, while Phil has a production background, having worked at the former FON Studios producing and engineering for the likes of 808 State, Nightmares On Wax and Pulp.

"The Sideways was more of a traditional line-up angry pop band, but it was quite ambitious. I wanted to simplify that," said Paul, also of Treebound Story, which spawned Babybird and Longpigs members. For a time Woodwork was a full band, but whittled down to the two Ps.

"Me and Phil know each others work so well. If we want someone else we give them a call. And that worked well in the studio. A lot of bands go in with songs already played on the live circuit. If we had worked all our songs out beforehand we might have restricted ourselves. We wanted to catch the moment, just go with the flow."

And Grade 'A' is very fluid. It has continuity without suppressing the personality of individual songs.

While Paul isn't clearing wallspace for his gold disc just yet he knows the Woodwork formula has provided them witha strong debut and a flexible M.O. for future record-making.

"If there's a case of more money might be involved but we are limited, that's too much sacrifice. We want to create music, if someone wants to sell that in a big way, that's fine. Then again, I still believe that if something is good then there's a good chance of it doing something." The Star,Thursday, June 4, 1998. Interview with David Dunn
