Despite the impression given by their handle, British Racing Green have not been in any great rush to enter the gridlock of bands bidding for pop's holy grail.
But now the engine is warmed up and the Barnsley boys keen to do some mileage, so to speak. First destination is four-track CD Penniless Man in Guccis/Southern Wood.
Although two years in the line-up the first eight months were spent writing and playing in a rehearsal room.
"It's better to iron things out there, now we are polished to go anywhere," said drums man Dave Caswell."
"We've always been of the opinion that if, maybe, people are paying good money to see us we should have enough songs and be able to play them. We don't do anything haphazardly, or we try not to."... David Dunn, The Star, January 9, 1997
British Racing Green are gearing themselves up for the national release of their debut single, the impressively tuneful Penniless Man in Guccis.
It has been available locally for a while but the Barnsley band are hoping that bigger things will start to happen when then single reaches a wider audience from February 17...
Any criticism that their Weller-esque r 'n' b influenced pop - currently very much in vogue thanks to Weller himself, Ocean Colour Scene and many others -is bandwagon jumping just doesn't stand up.
"We've been doing the same sort of stuff for probably six years, " says drummer Dave Caswell.
"It just seems to have caught on. We all get influences whether we like it or not by what is going on around us. It's only natural."
What BRG are all about is classy songwriting and impressive instrumentation. All four tracks on the single - including live-in-the-studio track Seen Through Rose Coloured Jam Jar Bottoms - are fine examples of their art.
And if anybody accuses them of ripping of Oasis with the track Southern Wood then Caswell has the perfect retort: "That's the oldest song we do." in other words it was written before Oasis were even invented...
