New replenished Astrids
THE Astrids took one or two people by suprise at their last concert in Sheffield when they introduced one number by saying it was a song about cannibalism. Now if it had come from some brute of a bloke who was spending his time on stage shouting at people it would probably passed without comment. But this came from the mouth of a man with the curly locks and cherubic face who describes the bands music as "played in a pop-rock style", but the rest is a mystery. We are a song band. I don't think it has got a bag, a box or a label." And vocalist Steve Avian is equally enigmatic when it comes to explaining just what is meant in his introduction to the song in question, Replenishing Lucy.
"It's really just about relationships," says Steve. "It's about how people can be in destructive relationships and how they can devour and swallow each other down emotionally and physically." He even quotes a few lines from the lyrics to emphasise his point: " She will swallow you down/ piece by piece/ spit out the bones/ suck on the meat".
...As for the music, well The Astrids do write classic pop material which stands a bit more investigation than the average, Steve is a powerful vocalist and Phil Staniland an inventive guitarist. They have also made a video for Replenishing Lucy which has been played repeatedly on one cable channel. Allegedly it features a girl eating a cake with what appears to be blood ending up all over her face. You have been warned. Martin Lilleker, Sheffield Telegraph
