In April 1983, songwriter Steven Masters and Jonathon Kirk joined up with Rob Barks and recorded a demo which resulted in a brief relationship with W.E.A. for whom they recorded two more tracks. After four months of writing and demoing a batch of songs, a publishing contract was offered to the band by Warehouse Entertaining Ltd, which they signed.
In March 1984 they recorded a session for Radio 1's Janice Long Show which was broadcast on March 24 and repeated on May 5. During June they played a collection of gigs and recorded various new tracks. Unfortunately in September, singer Steven Masters suffered a broken neck resulting in a period of inactivity.
January 1985 saw Mr President once again working towards their aim of producing high quality music and performing live, so after supporting Killing Joke at the Victoria Hall, Hanley in March, they recorded two more tracks, this time through Electra.

Mr President, Sheffield
If VARIETY is the spice of life, then there's enough of it floating around Sheffield's thriving music scene for three score and ten years, worth of vindaloos.
Mr President take the style of the Doors but twist the trademarks into their own brand of highly motivating music, a melodic pop punch. Tonight's set at the Psalter Lane Art College presents a 45 minute 'Dance!' sentence (no remission); their hooks bailed with keyboards and barbed with sax, the songs are guaranteed to ensnare.
This is only Mr President's fifth gig and yet they're already pulling quite an audience in spite of tonights's competition from long awaited home turf appearance by Chakk. This band is just beginning. Now read on ... Pete Marchetto
